Prediabetes is a condition where your blood sugar levels are higher than usual but not high enough for it to be termed diabetes. Prediabetes symptoms are almost like a warning call. It is like your friend asking you not to make that wrong decision, not to skip exercising today. If you do not heed these symptoms, unfortunately, you risk developing type 2 diabetes in the near future.

It is estimated that 84 million adults in the USA have prediabetes in 2015 and 70 per cent of these persons will develop diabetes in the long term. According to the National Urban Diabetes Survey, the estimated prevalence of prediabetes is 14 per cent in India. Speculating the future of pre-diabetes healthcare is Kavana Manjunatha in the Communication Design Class, an AI-assisted system where the solution is to create an add-on service that can be installed in Smartwatches(fit bits) and integrated with an existing health App.

Speculated with boAt Xtend Smartwatch with Alexa Built-in, 1.69” HD Display, Multiple Watch Faces, Stress Monitor, Heart & SpO2 Monitoring, 14 Sports Modes, Sleep Monitor. It has Alexa built-in Voice Assistant that sets reminders, and alarms and answers questions. HR & SpO2- The watch comes with a stress monitor that reads your HR to indicate stress levels. It also monitors your heart rate and SpO2 (blood oxygen levels) to keep a tab on your overall health.

What Causes Prediabetes?

Insulin is a hormone made by your pancreas that acts like a key to let blood sugar into cells for use as energy. If you have prediabetes, the cells in your body don’t respond normally to insulin. Your pancreas makes more insulin to try to get cells to respond. Eventually, your pancreas can’t keep up, and your blood sugar rises, setting the stage for prediabetes — and type 2 diabetes down the road.

Prevention is indeed better than cure as we ring in the New Year!

Data can be updated through existing tests and preventive measures can be integrated by providing fitness regimes and calorie intake reminders depending on their age, weight, height, calories burnt, heart rate etc. An Ai-enabled algorithm will help with generating a diet and health plan to prevent diabetes.

Kavana Manjunatha’s research on people and their diabetic journey led her to understand that everyone who had symptoms of Diabetes but never paid attention to it or the diagnosis didn’t show proper results due to a lack of technology and proper doctors. Sometimes intense stress, heavy weight gain/loss, poor diet and lack of physical activity are all factors which were overlooked. Almost everyone had an interesting story to tell about how it could have been prevented had they taken the correct measures early on.

Prediabetes does not imply that you will develop diabetes. But it’s almost like a warning of what’s to come. Prediabetes increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes by 5 to 15 times compared to people with normal blood sugar levels. Unfortunately, those odds will only grow higher if you don’t make any healthy adjustments to your diet or activity habits. Adults with prediabetes usually have no symptoms at all or the signs are so subtle that they go undiagnosed for years. There are, however, warning signs from time to time.

Speculating a new way of life, we ring in the new century with innovation and technology which lead to product enhancement, social media, consumer demand, market trends, and all aspects of our health can be addressed that AI-powered algorithms learn from us. Consumer behaviour is likely to be influenced by these factors, AI in Healthcare for prediabetes is more than a trend — it’s the future!
