India is now one of the fastest-growing aviation markets in the world, with its domestic demand reaching nearly 100 million passengers. In recent years, India has tremendously improved its travel and tourism competitiveness, especially post-Pandemic the industry is recovering and the hospitality sector is a major winner amid the recovery of economic activity. Millennials account for 34% of the country’s population, while Gen Zers account for 27% of those who are looking at remote working as an opportunity to improve work/life balance.

The Indian Gen Z discovers India and hears a multitude of languages and many musical dialects. It feels like there are almost hundreds of dialects! While India has 22 separate official languages, it is home to a total of 122 languages and 270 mother tongues. Indian languages belong to either the Indo-Aryan language family (the largest) or the Dravidian language family (the second largest). As one of world’s oldest language, Hindi is, unsurprisingly the most spoken language in India. Melodic and unique, it can be heard across much of North and Central India. It’s also spoken by 366 million people across the world. Dravidian languages are spoken by around 220 million people, living in southern and central India. The primary languages spoken are Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam.

India is a diverse country with many languages which makes conversation with people across different states difficult. Deep Tambde speculates with Google Translator, translating 121 Indian languages in real-time with ‘Boliyan’ an app which has all Indian languages and translates them in real-time through Bluetooth. The users would have to connect their Bluetooth devices to one phone and then through voice recognition AI, the translation would take place in real-time enabling a seamless experience. Providing India with a unique opportunity by taking advantage of 600,000 villages with their own cultures and heritage, ecotourism and cruise tourism to create unique experiences for travellers who are looking for a home away from the bustle of city life.

The Ministry of Tourism can promote India as a holistic destination as part of its ongoing activities to promote various tourism destinations keeping the culture and values of each place intact yet enabling access and boosting a secular ethos within a country with diverse ideologies. From developing clusters that foster productivity and innovation, making India the global hub for seamlessly doing business, to creating an ecosystem of shared mobility to become a critical enabler of growth in urban and rural areas focusing on a seamless experience at various touchpoints.

The Last Mile approach

This provides India with a unique opportunity to consider how to build demand and create adequate supply for its travel and tourism industry with Gen Z’s who discover their motherland with a newfound enthusiasm as 1.3 billion Indians will be moving from poverty to the middle class and from rural to urban areas in the coming decade.
